To my Dearest Little Boy,
Your first birthday is finally here and as I sit, tucked away in the corner of a coffee shop writing you this letter, I’m trying my hardest not to let all of these strangers see how emotional I am. It’s not a sad type of emotion that mamas get when their sweet little infants grow up too quickly before their eyes and time slips away faster than light. It’s an “I can’t believe how blessed I am to share my days on earth with you” type of emotion. Amazed at the fact that God has allowed ME to be your Mama. Most days, I feel like I don’t deserve you!
You were a longing in my heart for so many years that I sometimes thought that we would never get to meet. That I might never hear your newborn nursing grunts, peek into your piercing blue eyes, or feel your tiny hand resting up against my stomach while you sleep. This past year has been full of those moments and many more than I could have ever dreamed up and I’m just so grateful.
We’ve been a duo for a year now and I feel like you’ve taught me more about myself than I’ve taught you about this big, big world.
I now look at life completely different with you in it.
I see the afternoon light fall across our living room walls and smile when the trees sway outside because I know as soon as you catch a glimpse of it, you’ll shriek with excitement at the dancing shadows it creates on our walls.
Sometimes I’ll drive down the road with the car windows rolled down because I enjoy how much the wind tickles your face as you take in a deep breath and let out a big sigh.
You’ve taught me a lot about slowing down this past year.
Life is meant to be savored, not scheduled. Days need to be spent intentionally, not casually.
You, Sweet Boy, are full of much wisdom and you don’t even know it yet!
I’m proud of the person you’re becoming and I know that this next year as a one-year-old, you are going to do many amazing things. I’m holding onto grace and confidence that as your mama, I can be there for you when you need me and give you space when you want to face adventure on your own…without holding onto me with your dimpled little hands.
Wyatt, I love you so much it takes my breath away. From the moment we met, I knew you were extra special and that life with you would be my greatest journey. What a year it has been! Happy First Birthday, my sweet boy!
