WAYS TO MAKE SURE THERE ARE DIVERSITY AND INCLUSIVITY IN THE BOOKS YOUR CHILDREN ARE READING | NASHVILLE, TN MOTHERHOOD BLOG

There’s been good focus lately about diversity and inclusivity in children’s books. Since Wyatt was chewing on board books, I’ve tried to make sure that the books my kiddos are reading feature BIPOC, instead of people who only look like they do, but I still feel like there is room for me to improve.

Most of the books we own come from our favorite book subscriptions Bookroo and Imagination Library and it makes me happy with how diverse their books always are.

However, my new goal (and maybe one you can try out too) is to focus our local library reads even more than we already do. Instead of books about animals or things, we are going to search only for books featuring BIPOC as MAIN characters (not just supporting characters or background people). It’ll be interesting to see if our local library has plenty of stories to read through, or if this will give us the perfect opportunity to suggest they carry more inclusive books for all children.

What favorites are your littles reading lately? Rocket Shoes and Max and the Tag-Along Moon are on repeat in our house right now.
